The Emotional Stages of Retirement

Ellen Griggs, former COO and Managing Partner of NEPC, LLC, currently spends much of her time serving on the boards of several organizations. In addition to her board work, she coaches people who are making the transition to retirement. Having participated in the Life Portfolio Program, Ellen Griggs enjoys sharing what she has learned with others.

As with many major events in life, retirement is often accompanied by several stages of emotional adjustment. The first few emotional stages occur even before the actual date of retirement. Most people begin to imagine their retirement around six to 15 years ahead of time. During this time, people typically focus on saving for the retirement that they are imagining. Between three and five years before retirement, though, many people begin feeling hesitant. Retirement is more easily imagined, and people often begin worrying that they are not as prepared as they originally thought. However, as the retirement day approaches, feelings of anticipation grow and feelings of concern about preparedness diminish.

Once the retirement day arrives, many people are happy and experience a feeling of liberation. This stage is often considered a honeymoon phase of sorts because most retirees find enjoyment in doing activities that they were once unable to do regularly, such as traveling and visiting family. After a time, many retirees become disillusioned with retirement and may feel disappointed or useless once they’ve become bored with their post-retirement activities. Fortunately, this stage can be overcome by becoming more familiar with the new life that retirement brings. This later stage is generally one of the most difficult for people to handle, but once it is conquered, retirees are able to more fully enjoy their retirement.
